Free food, masseuse on call and a chance to win a foreign holiday and cash prizes are among the perks ecommerce majors have lined up to keep their employees motivated to chip in extra work hours during the big sale days.
Top marketplaces such as Flipkart, Snapdeal, Amazon and Paytm are all giving short-term dividend perks to their staff. Almost all these firms offer free finger food and meals, sports and recreation facilities, and round-the-clock drop services for female staff, during the peak sale days.
"There is a masseuse on call and arrangements made for employees to rest in office, apart from 24x7 functional offices and emergency rooms to cope with the big sale days," said a spokesperson for Flipkart.
Flipkart, Snapdeal, Amazon and Myntra recently concluded their annual-sale events while Paytm has planned it for the latter part of the month. "We have launched a special rewards programme to cater to our teams that work on special sales. Under this, the top performers of the team are rewarded with a cash prize every month," said Amit Sinha, vice president at Paytm.
"Besides this, we have sent out the best performing teams for holidays overseas. We have also given moon-shot bonuses to the top performing teams," he said.
Paytm carried out an app-only sale earlier this year and will be announcing its festive-season sale soon. Spends are done under the employee engagement and welfare programme of the company which has a quarterly budget.
Experts said, companies double the pay of employees and hire contract employees at a minimum guaranteed salary to mobilise hands required for big sale events.
"The work for the sale day events usually starts 10 days ahead and goes on till 10 days after its conclusion. It is a norm to double the salary of permanent employees for these days as an incentive," said Sudeep Sen, associate vice president at staffing firm TeamLease Services.
"Apart from this, the staffs hired on contract are usually paid salary for a committed period of 2-3 months even though the number of working days may not be as many to retain them," he said.
